2. History
The Strand Bookstore is a family-owned independent bookstore founded in 1927 by Benjamin Bass, an immigrant from Lithuania. Named after the famous publishing street in London, the Strand is the sole survivor of 48 bookstores on Book Row, which started in the 1890s and ran from Union Square to Astor Place. Now Nancy Bass Wyden, Benjamin Bass's granddaughter, is the sole owner of the Strand.
3. Fun Facts
⭆"18 miles of books" slogan—it means that if all the books housed in the Strand are placed side-by-side, they would extend over 18 miles in length. In fact, the Strand now carries over "23 miles of books".
⭆Many celebrities have worked in the store, including Patti Smith, Mary Gaitskill, Luc Sante, etc.
⭆The most expensive book in the Strand is a copy of James Joyce's Ulysses at $38,000.
